The TMID Method

Transformative Mindset Instructional Design

Developed by Sonja L. Howell, Ph.D., TMID connects research, reflection, and instructional design to support meaningful learning. The framework starts with a relevant purpose and brings together collaboration, resources, practice, trauma-informed approaches, assessment, and lifelong learning.

Put the framework into practice

  1. Collaborate: Identify the people, needs, and resources that shape the learning experience.
  2. Select meaningful resources: Align content, objectives, activities, and assessment.
  3. Learn through action: Make space for practice, projects, and collaboration.
  4. Support participation: Consider trauma-informed practices, accessibility, belonging, and self-awareness.
  5. Reflect and assess: Use formative assessment and observation to guide improvement.
  6. Continue learning: Evaluate mastery and impact, then revisit the design as needed.
